Choose Appearance – Customize from the Admin toolbar.
Here are the options you control from the Customize section.

Appearance – Customize – Admin Only

Click on the Appearance – Customize tab in the left-hand Admin menu.

This takes you to the area where most of the custom global settings for the site are made. Global settings are the default settings for different elements on the site.

Here’s a breakdown of what controls what.

Site Identity

  • Site Title = Middletown Springs Historical Society
  • Hide site title = checked (currently, both title and tagline are hidden and do not appear in the published version of the header. However, the text can be read by robots, etc. and can help with SEO so should remain filled in)
  • Tagline = Preserving the history of Middletown Springs
  • Logo = msh_logo_horz_black_final.png (found in the Logos and Graphics folder in the Media Library)
  • Retina logo = We do not use one as the main logo is the highest res we have.
  • Logo width = 310px
  • Site Icon = (also known as a favicon) cropped-mshs_favicon.png (found in the Logos and Graphics folder in the Media Library)

Layout

Container

  • Container Width = 1440px this is the default width of all pages on this site.
    • Separating Space = 0px (we handle all separators on a page by page basis)
    • Content Separator = 0em
    • Content Layout = Separate Containers
    • Container Alignment = Text
    • Content Padding (in pixels)
      • Desktop
        • Top = 0
        • Right = 40
        • Bottom = 40
        • Left = 40
      • Mobile
        • Top = 30

Header

(the top banner of the site where the logo and primary navigation menu are.)

  • Header Presets = Current

  • Navigation Dropdown = Hover (there are currently no Dropdowns)
  • Dropdown Direction = Right
  • Enable navigation search modal = unchecked (we use a plugin for more robust search)
  • Menu Item Width
    • Desktop = 8px
    • Mobile = nothing (inherits)
  • Menu Item Height
    • Desktop = 20px
    • Mobile = nothing (inherits)
  • Sub-Menu Item Height (there are no current sub-menus)= 20px
  • Sub-Menu Width = 174 px

Secondary Navigation

  • Mobile Menu Label = Menu
  • Navigation Width = Full
  • Inner Navigation Width = Contained
  • Navigation Alignment = Center
  • Navigation Location = Below Header
  • Dropdown Direction = Right (Again, there are no current dropdowns)
  • Menu Item Width = 25px

Sticky Navigation

  • Sticky Navigation = On (This means that the menu stays visible up top as you scroll down the page.)
  • Transition = Fade
  • Hide when scrolling down = Unchecked
  • Sticky Navigation Logo = None
  • Menu Item Height = 112px

Off Canvas Panel

  • Off Canvas Panel = Mobile only
  • Desktop Toggle Label=Side Menu (not used on desktop)
  • Style = Slide
  • Side = Left
  • Close Button = Outside
  • Menu Item Height = 37px

Sidebar

We do not use sidebars on either the training or main site.

Footer

This pertains only to the copyright info at the very bottom of pages. The midnight blue “Fat Footer” is a hook element that overrides some of these settings.

  • Dynamic CSS Print Method = Inline Embedding (a separate stylesheet would not improve this site and might cause problems)
  • Icon Type = SVG (converts site icons to improved vector graphic format for faster loading)
  • Underline Links = Not on hover (Links have underlines, which disappear on hover)
  • Cache dynamic CSS = Checked
  • Smooth scroll = Checked

We handle all menus from the Menu section of the Appearance tab, not here. The other section has an easier-to-use interface. See separate sheet.

We use hook elements rather than widgets. See separate sheet.

Homepage Settings

  • Your homepage displays = A static page
  • Homepage = Home
  • Posts page = not applicable. The site has no blog and does not use posts.
